Creating a Letter Grade Scheme

- Click on Grades from your navigation bar

- Under "Grades Area," click on Grades Scheme

- Under Schemes List, Click New

- Type a Name for your grade scheme

- Type letter grades in the Symbol column of the Ranges table; begin with "F" in row 1

- Type "D-" and "D" in the next two rows, and fill in the corresponding percentages

- Click [Save]

- To add the rows for the remaining letter grade symbols, type "9" in the Add Ranges box and click the green + sign (see table below)

Fill in the remaining letter grades and percentages

- Click [Save] when done.

- Note that D2L Grade Schemes do NOT round off grades.

- The above example assumes 60% is passing, but grants students with 59.5 the D-.

For students to see the letter grade scheme, you need to do the following

- In "Grades Area," click on [Grade Settings]

- In Grade Settings, click on Org Unit Display Options

- Next to "Grade Details," uncheck "Points Grade" and "Weighted Grade" if they are checked, and check the boxes next to "Grade Scheme Symbol" and "Grade Scheme Color"

- Click [Save] when done.

Curving Grades in D2L

You can really only apply grading curves to specific grade items, including the Final Grade, in D2L by creating a new "Grade Scheme." You can use the Grade Scheme to specify letter grades and their grade ranges. To access Grade Schemes, click Grades Schemes, located on the left side of your screen under the Grades Area menu.


Step 1: Create a New Grade Scheme

1) First, in Grade Schemes, click "New."
2) Then, enter a name for the scheme.
3) Next, choose a symbol type (e.g. A, B, C, etc.) and the corresponding grade range with the lowest value possible in the Start % column and the highest value possible in the Assigned Value % column.
4) Click Save to save your changes.
5) Once your grade scheme has been completed, you need to change the grade item's Grade Scheme in the Edit Grade Item screen or the Edit Calculated/Adjusted Final Grade screen.

Step 2: Curving a Grade Item or the Final Grade

Once you have created your Grade Scheme, follow the instructions below to apply it to selected grade items:

1) From the Manage Grades screen, click the title of the grade item you would like to edit.
2) Using the Grade Scheme drop down menu, select the Grade Scheme you created.
3) Click Save to save your changes.

Copy Grade Scheme from another D2L Course Site

1. From the Course Home page of the D2L site you wish to copy *into*, click [Grades] on the navigation bar.

2. Click [Grade Schemes]

3. Click [Copy]

4. In the list that appears, find the course site you wish to copy *from* and select the grade scheme to be copied.

5. Click [Copy]

6. Click [Save]
