Creating a Random Quiz in D2L

Random quizzes pull questions from folders in the D2L Question Library. Questions can be imported into folders in the Library, or they can be entered directly into such folders. Creating a question (or questions) in a folder is similar to creating a question in a New Quiz. The key to an effective random quiz is to start with enough questions in one (or more) folders in the library from which a random quiz would choose a subset. This tutorial assumed that you have already created folders in the Library with your questions. If you want to import questions into Library folders, consider taking a Quizzing Workshop offered by the LTC. Finally, it is possible (and pedagogically useful) not only to create random quizzes/exams, but to randomize the options in multiple choice questions. This must be done by checking randomize options for each question in the D2L Question Library folders. Remember that if you choose this strategy, you must modify questions with options such as a & b are correct, or none or the above are correct.

Instructions
  1. Logon to D2L, open your course site and click on Quizzes.
  2. Click on New.
  3. In the Properties tab, name the quiz.

  4. In the Restrictions tab, note that the quiz you are creating is inactive; be sure to make the quiz active when you are ready for students to take it.
    1. Optional: Set the dates during which students will be able to access the quiz.
    2. Set the time limit for the quiz (the time a student has to complete the quiz once they start it.
    3. Select a grace period and/or a late limit if you wish.
    4. Selecting enforce provides students with a countdown timer while they take the quiz, and flags late submissions.
    5. Select Auto–Submit if you want the students' quiz attempt to be submitted at the end of the exam + grace + late limit period. When Auto-Submit is selected, the student can continue to take the exam for as long as they like, but there score will be based only on questions completed by the end of the exam time limits.
    6. Advanced Availability is used to provide special conditions of access to the quiz. Contact the LTC for more information.

    7. In the Attempts tab, select the number of attempts students will have for your quiz or exam, and indicate how their attempts will be scored.

    8. The Submission Views tab controls what students will see after they submit their quiz. You can also schedule the appearance of different kinds of quiz/exam keys in this tab., Contact the LTC when you are ready to use this feature or the Reports tab features.

     5. The Layout/Questions Tab is where you add questions to your quiz.  There are several ways to
enter questions into a quiz.  The following instructions are for using questions in the Question
Library to create a random quiz with multiple choice and True/False questions.

  1.      Click Layout/Questions, & then Add/Edit Questions.
  2.      Next to Create New: click to select Section & click Create New.

     c. In the next screen, enter a name for your new section (e.g., Quiz 1) and click Save.

     d. Your new-named section appears on the next screen.

     e. Click on the new section and in the next screen, see the message: “ There are currently no sections
or questions contained in this section.”  This time, next to Create New: select Random Section and
        click Create New.

    f. Enter a name for your new random section (e.g., Quiz 1 MC, for multiple choice) and click Save

    g. Your new-named section appears next to a purple folder icon on the next screen.

    h. Repeat steps f and g to create a random section (purple folder) for T/F (True/False) questions if
you wish.  Contact the LTC for some suggestions about how to further organize more complex
        quizzes and exams.

6. When you have the number of random folders you need for the different kinds of questions in your
quiz/exam, you are ready to add questions to your folders.  Follow the next few instructions for each
group of questions to be placed in the different random (purple) folders.

  1.      Click on the first of the random sections (e.g., Quiz 1 MC).  In the next screen, click Import.

  1.      At Source Section in the next screen, select the library question folder containing your questions (e.g., biotest MC).  The next screen will show the folder you selected along with all of the questions in the folder.

    c. In this screen, place a check mark in the questions you want to include in your random quiz/exam, or
simply select all of the questions by placing a check next to the folder (best practice).  Then click Save.

    d. You will see a list of the selected questions in the next screen.

In this screen, select the number of these questions that should appear at random in each student’s quiz/exam.  You can also select a point value for each question.   Then click Save.  Note: a fast progress bar will show at the bottom right of the screen after which you’ll be in the same window.  Click on Back to Quiz Layout/Questions.

     f.  You will be returned to the Layout/Questions screen, which indicates that you have selected a set
of random questions from the Quiz 1 MC folder.

     g. To add questions from other question library folders to your random quiz, click on Add/Edit
Questions and repeat steps 5b through 5d, each time selecting a different question folder and
choosing the number of questions from that folder to include on the random quiz/exam.

     h. After adding questions from a folder, click Save Quiz.  Don't forget to save your quiz after adding
         the last batch of questions!

Set time restrictions on a D2L quiz

  1. From the D2L Course Home page, click on [Quizzes] in the main navigation bar
  2. Click on the title of the quiz in the Quiz List
  3. Click on the [Restrictions] tab
  4. Scroll down the page to “Timing”
  5. Set a time limit for your quiz.  Note: For an “objective” quiz, a time limit of 45 seconds to  1 minute per question is recommended by the literature.
  6. Select [Enforced]     Note: Quiz attempts submitted after the time limit + the grace period will be flagged as “late.”
  7. Change [Grace period] to 1 minute    Note: Quizzes submitted after the time limit + the grace period will be flagged as “late.”
  8. Under “Late Submissions,” the default is [Allow normal submission].  We recommend the default.
    • Note: This means users can always submit their quiz, regardless of time limits. If the quiz is submitted after the Time Limit no points are automatically deducted.  However, a notation will appear in the quiz grading area of the actual time taken to complete the quiz, so the instructor can manually deduct points, if appropriate.
  9. Scroll to the top of the page and click on [Save Quiz].
Other “Late Submissions” options – NOT RECOMMENDED – use only with CAUTION:

  • "Use Late Limit" ‐ If you select this option, you must enter a number of minutes for the "late limit."  Users are given a grade of ZERO if they submit the quizafter the time limit + grace period + late limit period.
  • “Auto‐Submit Attempt” – Please read the following cautions and notes thoroughly prior to selecting this option!
    • Quizzes are NOT submitted automatically.  The student must click “Submit” to complete the quiz submission process.
    • The "enforced" checkbox must be selected.
    •  Most importantly:   Any questions the student has not SAVED prior to the expiration of the time limit ‐‐ even if they have been answered ‐‐ will not be recorded in D2L when the student submits the quiz attempt.  Students must SAVE their answers before the time limit expires.
    •  If you believe you must choose this option, please give students clear instructions to save each answer before moving to the next question.

Ooops! Change Scoring for Quiz Question

Here's how an instructor can ...
  • change scoring on a specific QUESTION, after the quiz has been taken
  • automatically correct all student grading for that specific question
[Please note that this works for multiple choice and true/false questions, but NOT with "ordering" questions.]

  1. In the Quiz List, click on the name of the quiz your students have already taken.
  2. Click on the [Grade Quiz] icon (yellow ruler with green checkmark)
  3. On the next screen, click on the [Questions] tab.
  4. Click to choose "Update all attempts"

5.  Each question in the quiz is listed under the [Question] tab.

NOTE: If any question was changed after ANY student took the quiz, scroll down to look for the ORIGINAL version of the question(s), under the heading "Questions that are not on the quiz anymore"
  • Clicking on a question brings you to the question, with a summary of student responses.
  • Click on the title for each question you need to change scoring on, including old versions of the same question, if necessary.

Under each version, you will have the option to "give all attempts ___ points" or "give to selected choices ____ points."

This is where the instructor can correct the problem with quiz scoring. For example, if the instructor accidentally flagged the wrong answer in the quiz as correct, D2L would have erroneously given points to the students who chose the wrong answer.

The instructor may open the erroneously-marked version of the question, change the scoring to give the wrong answer 0 points, and give full points to the correct answer.

Don't forget to save!!!

"Can Exceed" Grade Item + Bonus Quiz Question(s)

Using 'Can Exceed' for a Quiz in the Gradebook

It is possible to set up a quiz to be automatically graded and automatically posted to a gradebook item which can exceed the point value of the quiz.  The method for achieving this outcome varies depending upon you are using a WEIGHTED or POINTS gradebook.

In a WEIGHTED Gradebook,  the instructor must mark individual questions in the quiz itself as 'bonus.' Otherwise, the grade item will record the percentage of the quiz score rather than the point total.

For example, for a ten-question quiz worth 10 points (where no individual questions are designated as "bonus"), when the quiz is automatically graded and sent to a gradebook item worth 9 points (even with 'can exceed' marked), the highest score that will be recorded in the gradebook is 9.  In this scenario, the gradebook will register that the quiz attempt was marked 100%, rather than 10 points.

To allow the attempt to register as more than 100% in the gradebook, at least one question or questions must be identified as "bonus." To do this, click the [Layout/Questions] area of the quiz, click on [Edit Values] and mark the question(s) that are bonus.

In a POINTS Gradebook, it is not necessary to mark any of the quiz questions as "bonus."  The Instructor must simply be sure that the grade book Category is not marked to "distribute points evenly."  This will allow the grade points to be exported from the quiz into the gradebook accurately, so that the grade item accurately exceeds both the allotted points (e.g., 22 vs. 20) and percentage (e.g., 22/20 points gets a percentage of 110%).

Viewing Quiz Results

To view the results for quizzes completed by students in the course:

-From the D2L course home page, click on [Quizzes].
-In the "Quiz List," click on [Grade Quiz] (yellow ruler) to the right of the correct quiz.
-Scroll down the next screen to view the users (i.e., students' names).
-Click on the [attempt] link to view the quiz results for a particular student.

The "Quiz Results" section shows the questions, as well as the individual student's correct and incorrect responses.

D2L Quizzes: "Auto-Submit" restriction

It can certainly be confusing -- "Auto-submit" doesn't actually automatically submit the student's quiz attempt.

Here's a bit more information that might be helpful:

QUESTION 1:  "Is the quiz still accessible to the student after the time limit + grace period expires?"

ANSWER: Yes -- it's still there because there's no way for D2L to, in effect, "take it away" once it's downloaded to the user's local browser page.

QUESTION 2:  "So, theoretically, students could continue trying to take the quiz and answer questions after the time limit is up, and the only way the instructor would know this is by checking each individual record?"

ANSWER: Students can continue to answer questions, but they cannot save their answers.  Any unsaved answers will not be recorded -- so even if the instructor checked each individual record, they will not see the unsaved/unrecorded answers. Those will be blank.

With the "auto-submit" selection, the quiz behaves this way:

  • student is able to save the answers to questions as they go along UNTIL time + grace period has expired
  • if the student continues to answer questions AFTER the time + grace has expired, they will get no notification UNTIL they attempt to SAVE or SUBMIT QUIZ
  • if the student attempts to save answers after the time + grace has expired, they will see a popup message that says "Time Limit Exceeded - The time limit for this quiz has been exceeded, please submit your quiz." ... THESE ANSWERS ARE NOT SAVED, even though the student still needs to click "submit quiz"
  • because the answers will not be saved to the system, the answer will be recorded as a blank, and the quiz attempt will score those unsaved answers as "0"

QUESTION 3:  "Will my students get warnings and flags for quizzes submitted 30 seconds late, etc.--amounts of time that are really not important?"

ANSWER:  The student gets a warning, as described above, each time they attempt to save an answer after the time+grace has expired.  D2L doesn't differentiate between "important" or "unimportant" periods of time -- the grace period is designed to cover that kind of "leeway."  The student doesn't get any flags when submitting the quiz late, but the instructor will see a red flag for any quiz submitted late, whether 30 seconds or 30 days.

Question Library, Quizzes, and Quiz Attempts

D2L Question Library, Quizzes, and Quiz Attempts

Definitions

The Question Library is a repository for questions within a D2L course site.  The questions may be:
  • created in the Question Library,
  • copied from the Question Library of another D2L course site, and/or
  • imported to the Question Library from a D2L Quiz or by using a product such as Respondus.

A Quiz is an assessment instrument within a D2L course site.  In addition to questions, a Quiz contains assessment timing and availability parameters, as well as other properties set by the instructor.

A Quiz Attempt is the specific set of questions, within the parameters and properties delineated by the instructor, which is delivered to a student who clicks on [Start Quiz] in D2L.

Organizing the Question Library

In the Question Library, the instructor can build an archive of questions which are available for use in any number of quizzes within the D2L course site.

An instructor can create “Sections” in the Question Library, which can be thought of as file folders where groups of questions can be stored and organized. For example the instructor might create a section called “multiple choice,” to store all multiple choice questions, or they might create a section to hold all questions related to a specific topic, such as “Theoretical Fundamentals.”

Storing questions in sections within the Question Library can also be useful when the instructor creates a quiz. Instead of hunting through a disorganized list of questions in the Question Library or creating individual quiz questions one at a time, the instructor can import a whole section of questions into a quiz at the same time – or pick and choose from among the questions within a particular section folder.

Although it is possible to create quiz questions directly in a quiz, the instructor gains flexibility and added functionality by creating all questions in the Question Library, and later adding them to the quizzes.

Organizing the Quiz

The instructor can also create “sections” in Quizzes, and use them as folders to organize groups of questions.   It is important to note that the Quiz sections are separate and distinct from the sections the instructor created or copied into the Question Library.

Two kinds of sections are available in Quizzes.  The first is the standard Section, which behaves like a folder; in fact, the icon in D2L looks like a manila folder.  The second, a Random Section, has special characteristics and can be distinguished in D2L by the purple color of the folder icon.

A Random Section enables the instructor to draw upon the Question Library to present a different set of questions (Quiz Attempt) each time a student takes the quiz.  For example, the instructor could set up a Random Section to pull in a bank of 50 questions from the Question Library, then present 10 of those questions, randomly selected, for each Quiz Attempt.  Note: Random Section questions cannot be created directly within a Quiz; they must be drawn from the Question Library.

Relationships:  Question – Question Library – Quiz – Quiz Attempt
To understand the relationship between individual questions, the D2L Question Library, D2L Quizzes, and students’ Quiz Attempts, it is helpful to consider the following sample scenarios.

Scenario One: Quiz with Random Section

1.       Questions are stored in Question Library – How did they get there?  The instructor may have
a.       created them there
b.      copied them from a previous course site’s Question Library
c.       imported them to the Question Library from an existing quiz or by using a third party product like Respondus

2.       Quiz creation – the instructor creates a new quiz in D2L using the Quizzes tool, giving it a name, designating its availability and other parameters for quiz administration. At this point, there are no questions in the quiz.

3.       Random section creation – within the blank quiz, the instructor creates a new Random Section.

4.       Add questions to Random Section – again within the quiz, the instructor “imports” questions from the Question Library, into the Random Section.  This import actually creates a “snapshot” copy of the selected questions; it does not change the location of the original questions, which remain as they were, in the Question Library.

5.        Quiz Availability – the instructor makes the quiz available to students.

6.       Quiz Attempt – as soon as the student clicks on “Start Quiz” and confirms that they are prepared to take the quiz, D2L fetches the correct number of questions, randomly selected, and puts a “snapshot” copy of those questions into the student’s own Quiz Attempt.

Again, this action changes neither the location of the original questions in the Question Library, nor the location of the first copy of the question set which remains in the Random Section of the Quiz.

Once the student opens a Quiz Attempt, the questions (and their order) will not change, even if the instructor changes the text or scoring of a question in the Question Library or in the Quiz Random Section.  (There are other ways to change scoring of a quiz attempt, which are discussed elsewhere.)

Scenario Two: Quiz without Random Section

3.       Add questions to Quiz – the instructor “imports” questions from the Question Library, into the Add/Edit Questions area of the quiz.  This import actually creates a “snapshot” copy of the selected questions; it does not change the location of the original questions, which remain as they were, in the Question Library.

4.        Quiz Availability – the instructor makes the quiz available to students.

5.       Quiz Attempt – as soon as the student clicks on “Start Quiz” and confirms that they are prepared to take the quiz, D2L puts a “snapshot” copy of the quiz questions into the student’s own Quiz Attempt.

Again, this action changes neither the location of the original questions in the Question Library, nor the location of the first copy of the question set which remains in the Random Section of the Quiz.

Once the student opens a Quiz Attempt, the questions (and their order) will not change, even if the instructor changes the text or scoring of a question in the Question Library or in the Quiz.  (There are other ways to change scoring of a quiz attempt, which are discussed elsewhere.)

Scenario Three: Editing a Question
An instructor may need to change a question for any number of reasons, and must be aware of how the change will affect all the different “copies” of that question within the D2L course site.  Good news: the instructor doesn’t have to remember whether the question appears in multiple locations, because D2L will tell you!

If the question appears in both a quiz and the Question Library, or if it is used in more than one quiz within the current D2L course site -- whether the instructor changes the question in a specific quiz or in the Question Library -- a D2L page will display, showing a list of the locations (e.g., quizzes, question library sections) where a copy of that question appears.  All the instructor needs to do is select all the locations where they wish to apply the change to that question, and click [Save].  NOTE: if the instructor clicks [Cancel], the question will not be changed in ANY of the listed locations.

There is one place where the question will NEVER change: in a student’s Quiz Attempt.  That’s because the student’s attempt must accurately reflect the quiz, as it existed at the time the student took it.

Scenario Four:  After the Quiz  - Changing the Scoring for a Multiple Choice or True/False Question
What if the instructor needs to change the way a question has been scored in a quiz? Here's how an instructor can:
  • change scoring on a specific questionafter the quiz has been taken
  • automatically correct all student grading for that specific question

Important: this procedure works for multiple choice and true/false questions, but NOT with "ordering" questions.

In the Quiz List, click on the name of the quiz your students have already taken.
  1. Click on the [Grade Quiz] icon (yellow ruler with green checkmark)
  2. On the next screen, the default tab is [Attempts]. Click on the [Question] tab.
  3. Each question in the quiz is listed under the [Question] tab.
·         Clicking on a question brings you to the question, with a summary of responses.
·         Along with the summary is a list of versions of that question -- so, if the question has been changed at all since the quiz was first made available to students, this is where you can see how many people responded to each version of the question.
o    Click on the little pencil icon for each version of the question. This is where the instructor can correct the problem with quiz scoring. For example, if the instructor accidentally flagged the wrong answer in the quiz as correct, D2L would have erroneously given points to the students who chose the wrong answer.
o    Under each version, you will have the option to "give all attempts ___ points" or "give to selected choices ____ points."  The instructor may open the erroneously-marked version of the question, change the scoring to give the wrong answer 0 points, and give full points to the correct answer.
