Creating a Random Quiz in D2L

Random quizzes pull questions from folders in the D2L Question Library. Questions can be imported into folders in the Library, or they can be entered directly into such folders. Creating a question (or questions) in a folder is similar to creating a question in a New Quiz. The key to an effective random quiz is to start with enough questions in one (or more) folders in the library from which a random quiz would choose a subset. This tutorial assumed that you have already created folders in the Library with your questions. If you want to import questions into Library folders, consider taking a Quizzing Workshop offered by the LTC. Finally, it is possible (and pedagogically useful) not only to create random quizzes/exams, but to randomize the options in multiple choice questions. This must be done by checking randomize options for each question in the D2L Question Library folders. Remember that if you choose this strategy, you must modify questions with options such as a & b are correct, or none or the above are correct.

Instructions
  1. Logon to D2L, open your course site and click on Quizzes.
  2. Click on New.
  3. In the Properties tab, name the quiz.

  4. In the Restrictions tab, note that the quiz you are creating is inactive; be sure to make the quiz active when you are ready for students to take it.
    1. Optional: Set the dates during which students will be able to access the quiz.
    2. Set the time limit for the quiz (the time a student has to complete the quiz once they start it.
    3. Select a grace period and/or a late limit if you wish.
    4. Selecting enforce provides students with a countdown timer while they take the quiz, and flags late submissions.
    5. Select Auto–Submit if you want the students' quiz attempt to be submitted at the end of the exam + grace + late limit period. When Auto-Submit is selected, the student can continue to take the exam for as long as they like, but there score will be based only on questions completed by the end of the exam time limits.
    6. Advanced Availability is used to provide special conditions of access to the quiz. Contact the LTC for more information.

    7. In the Attempts tab, select the number of attempts students will have for your quiz or exam, and indicate how their attempts will be scored.

    8. The Submission Views tab controls what students will see after they submit their quiz. You can also schedule the appearance of different kinds of quiz/exam keys in this tab., Contact the LTC when you are ready to use this feature or the Reports tab features.

     5. The Layout/Questions Tab is where you add questions to your quiz.  There are several ways to
enter questions into a quiz.  The following instructions are for using questions in the Question
Library to create a random quiz with multiple choice and True/False questions.

  1.      Click Layout/Questions, & then Add/Edit Questions.
  2.      Next to Create New: click to select Section & click Create New.

     c. In the next screen, enter a name for your new section (e.g., Quiz 1) and click Save.

     d. Your new-named section appears on the next screen.

     e. Click on the new section and in the next screen, see the message: “ There are currently no sections
or questions contained in this section.”  This time, next to Create New: select Random Section and
        click Create New.

    f. Enter a name for your new random section (e.g., Quiz 1 MC, for multiple choice) and click Save

    g. Your new-named section appears next to a purple folder icon on the next screen.

    h. Repeat steps f and g to create a random section (purple folder) for T/F (True/False) questions if
you wish.  Contact the LTC for some suggestions about how to further organize more complex
        quizzes and exams.

6. When you have the number of random folders you need for the different kinds of questions in your
quiz/exam, you are ready to add questions to your folders.  Follow the next few instructions for each
group of questions to be placed in the different random (purple) folders.

  1.      Click on the first of the random sections (e.g., Quiz 1 MC).  In the next screen, click Import.

  1.      At Source Section in the next screen, select the library question folder containing your questions (e.g., biotest MC).  The next screen will show the folder you selected along with all of the questions in the folder.

    c. In this screen, place a check mark in the questions you want to include in your random quiz/exam, or
simply select all of the questions by placing a check next to the folder (best practice).  Then click Save.

    d. You will see a list of the selected questions in the next screen.

In this screen, select the number of these questions that should appear at random in each student’s quiz/exam.  You can also select a point value for each question.   Then click Save.  Note: a fast progress bar will show at the bottom right of the screen after which you’ll be in the same window.  Click on Back to Quiz Layout/Questions.

     f.  You will be returned to the Layout/Questions screen, which indicates that you have selected a set
of random questions from the Quiz 1 MC folder.

     g. To add questions from other question library folders to your random quiz, click on Add/Edit
Questions and repeat steps 5b through 5d, each time selecting a different question folder and
choosing the number of questions from that folder to include on the random quiz/exam.

     h. After adding questions from a folder, click Save Quiz.  Don't forget to save your quiz after adding
         the last batch of questions!

Editing D2L Quiz Questions

To edit your quiz questions and/or answer choices:
  • Go to Quizzes
  • Click on the link for one of your quizzes
  • Select the "Layout/Questions" tab
  • Click on the "Add/Edit Questions" button
  • Click on your random section folder
  • Click on the link for the question you would like to edit

Creating a Quiz Key

The best way for an instructor to create quiz key that shows questions and corresponding correct answers:

1. set up a submission view that shows all questions and answers

2. click on the Preview Quiz icon and take the quiz yourself (getting all the answers right would be good, but otherwise you could just not answer any of the questions, so there would be no right and no wrong responses shown in the submission view afterwards)

3. submit the quiz (still in the Preview)

4. access the submission view that shows all questions and answers

5. highlight and copy all the question and answer information

6a. paste into a Word document, then upload the Word document to D2L's Content area, or save it as a .pdf and upload that to the Content area

6b. go to Content, click [New Topic], click [Create New File], and paste into the D2L HTML editor and save

Viewing Quiz Results

To view the results for quizzes completed by students in the course:

-From the D2L course home page, click on [Quizzes].
-In the "Quiz List," click on [Grade Quiz] (yellow ruler) to the right of the correct quiz.
-Scroll down the next screen to view the users (i.e., students' names).
-Click on the [attempt] link to view the quiz results for a particular student.

The "Quiz Results" section shows the questions, as well as the individual student's correct and incorrect responses.

Quiz Timing Restrictions

Quiz timing can be confusing, and the descriptions available in D2L of these restrictions are not always intuitive. While D2L has provided the following information to guide users through this process, members of the LTC staff decided to conduct an “experiment” to better understand the ways in which the timing restrictions work.

Three quizzes were developed for the purpose of this experiment. Each quiz was completed and submitted after the time limits to determine the effect of the timing restrictions. The questions for each quiz were identical, but the Timing restrictions were modified in the following manner:

Condition 1: Set a Time Limit, Grace Period, and Use Late Limit, as well as select enforced and show clock.
Condition 1 results: The quiz submission was flagged in red as late, and the student received a 0 for the quiz.

Condition 2: Set a Time Limit and Grace Period, as well as select enforced and show clock.
Condition 2 results: The quiz submission was only flagged in red as late. Points were given to the student for the correct quiz answers.

Condition 3: Set a Time Limit, Grace Period, and Use Late Limit with only show clock selected.
Condition 3 results: The quiz submission was not flagged as late, and the student received points for the correct quiz answers.
Overall, selecting the enforced restriction flags late quiz submissions in red. This can be helpful to instructors who want to know which students exceeded the allotted quiz time. Using a Late Limit in conjunction with enforced not only flags the quiz as late, but the student will be given 0 points for the quiz. Instructors should be cautious about using Late Limit with the enforced restriction unless they plan to be strict about granting 0 points for late quiz submissions.

Additionally, students will know how much time is allowed and how much time is spent on the quiz as t
his clock is always in upper left hand corner:  Est. Length: 0:05:00  Time Taken: 0:03:00.

Importing from Quiz to Question Library

Sometimes respondus (an old version) imports new quiz items into a quiz rather than the question library. Or, you might have entered the

You can import them from the quiz in the quiz list to the quiz library.

Go to question library, create a folder for the newly imported quiz items, click on Import, under Source Collection choose the quiz that just imported, under Source Section choose Collection Root, the questions imported should appear, check the top box next to Collection Root (which checks all the boxes), and click save.

Once the items are imported into the folder in the question library, feel free to delete that imported quiz from the quiz list.

Method for Specifying Quiz Question Weights has changed

Method for Specifying Quiz Question Weights has changed

As of January, 2010, the method of specifying quiz question weights for several questions was changed. Instead of a dropdown box with some percentage choices (0,20,25,33.33,40,50,60,66.67,75,80,100), weights are specified in a text box on a scale of 0 (no credit) to 100 (full credit).

This offers more flexibility, but has been a source of confusion for some instructors. The quizzing interface does not make it clear that weights are percentages ranging from 0 to 100 with up to 2 decimal places allowed. All instructors see is "Weight" and a blank box.

On behalf of the UW campuses using D2L, our hosting Utility has submited the following feature request:
1. Provide a heading of "Weight (%)," or to put a "%" sign after each weight box.
2. If possible, bring the drop down back with an "other" option that opens a blank text box where the user can enter a custom percent.

Two Unicode Characters Can Disrupt Functions in D2L for Non-IE Browsers

Two Unicode Characters Can Disrupt Functions in D2L for Non-IE Browsers

Two Unicode characters, the line separator and paragraph separator characters (U+2028 and U+2029), when used in the HTML editor, can disrupt a variety of functions on the page when viewed with browsers other than Internet Explorer. There are two documented examples of this. (1) If the characters appear on a Content page, the content is not visible to Firefox, Safari, Chrome, or other non-IE browsers. The navigation functions through the Table of Contents sidebar may also be disrupted. The content can be viewed if the window is undocked. (2) If used in Quiz questions, you can preview the questions with the unicode character and you can see the question text and choices when you are in the Add/Edit view, but when you attempt to edit the quiz you cannot; none of the buttons except Cancel work

If you encounter a situation where there is user-generated HTML content on a page that works with IE, but not with other browsers, please inform the Learning Technology Center. We will complete a Problem Reporting Form and ask our host Utility to contact the vendor to look for the offending characters.

Quizzes: time restricted quiz

Question: When a student clicks the start quiz link to a time-restricted quiz, does the time clock start and continue even if the student closes the D2L browser window before submitting the quiz?

Yes, if a quiz has a time limit once the student clicks the Start Quiz link the time starts regardless if the quiz is submitted.  Moreover if the quiz is set to allow for normal submission the student can submit the quiz even if the time limit and grace period have expired. Submissions after the grace period will be flagged as late. Please note: once a student starts a quiz saves his/her responses exits the quiz without submitting it the clock is still ticking.

Quizzing: See student responses

Question: How can an instructor see an individual student's quiz answers on D2L?

  1. In the Quiz List, click on the [ruler-&-checkmark] icon to the right of the quiz in question.
  2. In the list of students that appears, click on [attempt 1] under the name of the appropriate student.
  3. Scroll down on the next page to see the student's quiz with their responses.
