D2L News -- Course Home Page

If you are concerned with the amount of space taken up by the "D2L News" and the "Role Switch" in the left-hand column of the Course Home page -- we have good news!

First, the students do NOT see the same width column on the left, because they do not see the "Role Switch" tool.

Second, instructors can make the column narrow by simply closing or minimizing the "Role Switch" box. Just click on the double-arrows icon on the right side of the title bar! See below for a screen shot.

Quizzing: Submission Views

Question: After the quiz period is over, I'd like to show the students what they got wrong. How do I do this?

Answer: Set up a quiz Submission View to be released to students at a specific date and time, and choose the information they will see.

To begin, go the the [Quizzes] area of your course site and click Edit Quiz.

Then click on the [Submission Views] tab at the top.

Then click on [Add Additional View]. (See the screen shot below.)

Sample Submission View

1. Choose a name for the Submission View.

2. This Submission View is only available to students after a specific date and time.

3. Make choices from the options available. This particular Submission View allows students to see each question *with* their responses, but does not show them the correct answers. Students can also see their score on each question, and their overall score for the Quiz.

D2L 9.2.1 SP3 – September 2011

Getting Started with a New D2L Course Site

When an instructor first opens a new D2L site, it will be blank except for the D2L News.

To begin working in your D2L course site:

1. Check to confirm you are in your own course by confirming the title matches what you're expecting.

2. We suggest that you create a "Welcome" message in the News area to greet your students and let them know who you are an where to find the information you want them to use. For example, you may wish to direct them to your syllabus by telling them to click on [Content].

3. When you are ready for the students to see your D2L site, you will need to make it "Active." To do this, click on [Edit Course]. On the next page, click [Course Offering Information], mark the checkbox beside "IsActive," then click [Save].

Fill in the blank quiz update

August 2009

D2L has updated the fill in the blank function in order to allow for text before the blank that appears in the centers AS WELL AS after. Previously, there was only one text box that would allow text to appear before the fill in the blank box.

It is important to know this because if you do not have text after the box, D2L will throw an error saying that you have not completed all required fields (see below)

Errors

There were 1 error(s) found in the information you submitted:

* Field is required.

You must delete this text box by clicking on the trash can next to the text field. See the red circle in the image below.

"Error: No Login" when downloading files in Internet Explorer 7

There is a known issue when using Internet Explorer 7 (IE7). Users may encounter a message that says, "Error: No login" when attempting to download files.

The problem and workaround is documented in the Known Issues List: https://atjira.doit.wisc.edu/KnownIssuesList/RequestController?issueId=21073&stylesheet=knownissues.css

Here's what it says:

Desire2Learn Issue Detail

Basic Information

Issue Key: DTL-1719 Issue Type: Information Report Date: 2009/06/04
Issue Status: Reopened Priority: Major Last Updated: 2009/06/18
Components: Content Tool

Description

8.4 MR1 - IE7 initially blocks upload of some file types in Content: ppt (except when embedded), pptx, docx and xlsx

Problem: When Internet Explorer 7 finds a security concern with a file, it puts out a message underneath the browser navbar. It is neccesary to click on "Click here for option" and "Download," The process takes you back to the course homepage. Go back into Content and click on the topic that IE7, you are prompted to "Open." As long as you remain in Content Tool, other topics with same problem will get the prompt. It objects to ppt (except when embedded), and 2007 Office files: pptx, docx and xlsx. If these same files are used in Dropbox submissions or as Discussion attachments, they open fine. Firefox 3 automatically prompts to download the files.

Workaround: You can disable this feature in Internet Explorer 7 by the following steps: Click the Tools button, and then click Internet Options. Click the Security tab, and then click Custom level. Scroll to the Downloads section of the list, and then, under 'Automatic prompting for file downloads', click Enable.

UWM only -- Combining classes into one D2L course site

Can't find your UWM D2L course site? Found it, but it's not the right section(s)?

If you are unable to locate your D2L course sites, first, please follow these instructions: http://d2ltipsandtricks.blogspot.com/2009/05/uwm-only-how-to-find-your-d2l-course.html

If you *still* can't find it, or if the D2L site doesn't combine your classes in they way you'd like, please let us know! Sometimes the humans at the Learning Technology Center just don't guess correctly (based on the online schedule) which classes and sections should be combined into single D2L course sites.

If this is the case, please gather all the essential information (including the exact section number/s -- please don't guess, or you could end up with the wrong students!) and fill out the web-based UWM D2L Course Site Request form you'll find at:http://www4.uwm.edu/ltc/d2l/d2lrequest.cfm

Your D2L course site will usually be available within 24 hours, and student enrollments will normally happen overnight, Monday through Friday.
