Subscribe to Dropbox Deadline Reminders (Email, SMS)

The Notifications feature allows you to subscribe to receive email or SMS (text) notifications about approaching Dropbox folder deadlines.

Email and/or SMS subscribers will be notified about end dates that are two days away. Even if you have already submitted files to the Dropbox, you will be notified in case there are files you would like to add or would like to make final modifications before the end date.

In addition to receiving immediate notifications, you can also add Dropbox folders with end dates in the next 7 days to the daily course update.

Subscribe to News (Email, SMS, RSS)

There are three ways to receive notifications about changes to course news:

  1. Email (a system defined email address or another email address)

  2. SMS (text message)

  3. RSS (news feed)

By selecting one or more of these news options, you will be notified whenever a news item is available, or when an instructor makes a major update to a news item.

Email notifications can go to any email address you choose. These messages include the headline, full body of the new item, links to access the News tool for the course, and any attachments.

SMS notifications enable you to receive news items on your mobile device. These notifications include a course identifier, and as much of the headline and news body text as allowed in a short message.

If you would like to aggregate your news from all your current courses or from individual ones, you can subscribe to an RSS feed for News.

Once you click on the RSS feed icon, you will be able to subscribe via the news aggregator of your choice.

RSS works best with Firefox and Safari. Chrome has issues with the RSS feature. If you use Chrome, you can get a plug-in as a workaround. However, the plug-in lacks functionality.

Subscribe to Course Updates (Email)

Instead of receiving immediate notifications, you have the option to receive a daily activity summary for each course.

The daily summary includes News activity details and Dropbox folders with approaching end dates. For students, this notice also includes the number of:
  • Unattempted quizzes
  • Unread discussion messages
  • New email messages
  • Dropbox submissions with unread feedback
For instructors, the summary includes the number of:
  • Unread discussion messages
  • New Emails
  • Ungraded quiz attempts
  • New dropbox submissions
  • New enrollments

Resizing the D2L HTML editor window

It is possible to change the size of the window where I type in D2L!

1.  Click on the lower right-hand corner of the HTML editor window, then
2.  drag it to make the window larger or smaller, as you wish.

Here's a quick (silent) video that illustrates how to do it: http://screencast.com/t/CyFAublxZALC

Sending email from the D2L Classlist

  1. Click on [Classlist] in the main navigation bar
  2. Click on “ Email everyone on this tab” above the box that contains the user
names.* The icon looks like an envelope with a blue star in the corner.
  3. In the popup “Compose New Message” window, type the subject of the email in the [Subject:] text box
  4. Type the body of your email in the [Message:] text box
  5. OPTIONAL: Click [Browse] to include a file as an attachment. (a. A second popup window will appear. b. Find the desired file and select by clicking on it. c. The second popup window will disappear.)
  6. Click on [send]

Important: D2L does NOT have a “sent mail” folder, so we recommend you also send yourself a copy!

*Potential Problem Sending Email to Many Recipients
Large-enrollment classes may exceed the 4100-character limit in the address fields.
Problem: If you attempt to send an email message to a large number of recipients from within the D2L, the message may not be sent to all of the recipients. There is a limit of 4100 characters for the string of email addresses (strung together with a semicolon separator) in each of the "To:", "Cc:", and "Bcc:" fields in the email composer interface. This typically imposes a limit of 100 to 200 recipients per message sent, depending upon the lengths of the email addresses.
Workaround: Send the email message from the Classlist to only one page of students at a time by checking "Select all rows" and then selecting the "E-mail selected users in a new window on this page" icon.

How to email students from different sections enrolled in ONE D2L cours site

How do I email students from different sections of ONE D2L course site.

Scenario: I want to be able to email students from individual lab sections. Thus, I would not want to email everyone on the lab, but rather just students in a particular lab section.

Click Email from the navigation bar
Click the Address Bookicon from the Message List page

You can filter and view your Address Book contacts in the same way as messages in the Message List. For example, the Filter by feature allows you to quickly sort and view your contacts by specific group or section enrollment.

Click the down arrow to the Filter by drop-down menu and select the section that students are enrolled.
Click the To, Cc, Bcc links to add the address (students emails) for your message in the To, Cc, Bcc fields, as applicable.
Click the Add Recipients button.
Enter a subject line, if desired.
Type your message in the message area.
Browse and add any attachments, if applicable.
Click the Spell Check icon.
Click Send.

Emailing Groups in D2L

1. Log into D2L and click on the course title

2. Click on [Classlist]

3. Click on the [Students] tab

4. At the "View by" prompt, click the dropdown menu and select [Groups]

5. To the right of "View by: Groups", click the dropdown menu and select one of your sections or groups

6. Click on [Apply]

7. Above the list of names, on the right, click on the dropdown menu to select "200 per page" (or the largest number possible)

8. Above the list of names, on the left, click in the small box to select all the names in the list

9. Above the list of names, click the small envelope icon to email the students in this section or group

Don't forget to copy yourself on your email, since D2L doesn't have a "sent" folder.

FAQ: Why did the dropped students in the group appear in the email list?

Faculty: A student in a group informed me that when she went to email the members of her group, the email went to FIVE students, not three. I checked, and see that the email went to two students who are no longer in the class -- they dropped. But I don't see them in the groups enrollment page.

This is a known issue:

A workaround is to send email from the Classlist. Filter the Classlist to show the desired group and then click "Email everyone on this tab." Your email message will be sent to the proper recipients.

D2L External Email - "from" name

Tanya wondered how to make her name show up in emails she is sending from D2L -- not just her username or her email address. I suggested this, and I'm very pleased that it works! (Tanya is pretty excited, too.)
